LEGISLATIVE INFORMATION

One aspect of carrying out the teachings of social justice is to get involved in promoting the results of applying the teachings to various relevant bills that are put forth in the legislature either at the local levels (county, state) or the national level. If you examine, not necessarily closely, the differences between charity and justice, you will quickly see that one important difference is helping to bring about long term changes that might possibly eliminate or mitigate the causes of needing the charity.

In has become clear to the SJC that almost all of the IHM parishioners are unaware of of the "positions" of the USCCB in areas of social justice. Such positions or alerts can be found on the bishops web site -- and it is these positions that various USCCB members are promoting to congress. Besides being generally aware of these positions, if one agrees with a position then one can and should get involved by writing his/her representative.

The SJC has established an electronic network to facilitate informing the parishioners of selected "alerts" or relevant information coming from the USCCB or the Archdiocese.  To the extent feasible, that same "alert" would be considered for an insert in the Sunday Bulletin.

During election years, the SJC also conducts Voter Registration Drives.  Various members of the committee go to the county for training, and then set up registration tables outside the church during the Fall prior to the elections.
