The IHM Social Justice Committee recognizes the need to distribute to the
parish information generated by either the Archdiocese of Atlanta or the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) concerning advocacy. The Church
speaks often to issues that are both moral and political, but it directs its
attention to the issues, not to political parties or candidates.
The USCCB has addressed this issue: “The Church is called to
educate Catholics about our social teaching, highlight the moral dimensions of
public policies, participate in debates on matters affecting the common good,
and witness to the Gospel through our services and ministries. The Catholic
community’s participation in public affairs does not undermine, but enriches the
political process and affirms genuine pluralism. Leaders of the Church have the
right and the duty to share Catholic teaching and to educate Catholics on the
moral dimensions of public life, so that they may form their consciences in
light of their faith."
The Social Justice Committee has formed an "IHM Legislative Network"
which is comprised of parishioners each of whom has a registered email with the parish.
Through this network, the SJC promotes relevant USCCB Policy Statements and
Alert Bulletins and other appropriate information as well as information that
may be issued by the Archdiocese of Atlanta.
The committee does not arrive at a "position" on its own nor does it
participate in protests, or the like, as a committee. Any such
participation is done by the individual.
